Wondering what to do after SLC ?

with 0 Comment
For SLC Results: Type SLC<space>Symbol no. to 35001. E.g.: SLC 1234567 to 35001
SMS valid only after the results are published.

after SLC

So after much hype and excitement, SLC examinations are finally over. Starting on 14 th of March and continuing over a period of 9 days, SLC this year had over half a million examinees. Now these students have nearly three months time before the results are out. Instead of wasting away this time in just waiting for the result and lazing around, we would suggest everyone to indulge in something creative and educative.

Post SLC period is usually very useful time to explore one’s interests and ambitions which would help the students decide their future course of study. Many institutes across the country offer short term courses that besides equipping students with additional skills also make them well prepared for courses ahead of them

Most students often utilize this period to learn computer programming and softwares, or join a bridge course for ten plus two or other diploma courses. But most of you might frown at the idea of spending the overly precious free time that you get after a hectic schedule of studying for the SLC in studying new courses or reading books. But we don’t suggest you to devote entire time in studying. As we said, thie time can be used to explore one’s interest and ambitions so you can spend the time learning to play guitar or any other musical instruments, learn ride a motorcycle, go on an expedition or travel to some exotic places. No matter what you do, do not waste away this period by sitting idle and watching TV.

But whatever the SLC students might busy themselves in, at the back of their minds, they are always worried about the results. Through this article, the message we want to convey to you is that worrying about result is completely futile. So, why don’t you enjoy your short-lived freedom as others did last year- they just messaged SLC<space>Symbol No. to 5001 and we took care of delivering their results to them as soon as the result were out.

Please note that, results by SMS are for immediate informative purpose only. The accuracy of the results should be verified with the official marksheet published by OCE, Sano Thimi.

The Confluence of International Happiness Day & World Sparrow Day

with 0 Comment
International Happiness Day- March 20 worldwide is also marked as World Sparrow Day. On this wonderful confluence of two apparently unrelated but metaphorically linked day, we thought about drawing your attention to what actually makes these two days related to each other in so many ways. Firstly, we all know that happiness lies in small things that we most often tend to overlook, similarly, sparrow a small but beautiful bird was not considered for any conservation programs until Nature Forever Society in collaboration with Eco-Sys Action Foundation took the initiative to raise awareness of sparrow by observing the world sparrow day. Sparrow is a common bird found around the world but also highly vulnerable which makes it more like happiness which can be easily found to those who have their arms open to it but can also be lost with a small mistake.

We don't have any thing very profound to say to you. All we want to say is that like sparrow it's the small things in your life that matters the most. Overlooking smaller things can lead to missing some great things. So instead of ignoring small important things, it's necessary that we understand their importance in life and embrace them with open heart. So while big things will come with time, do not miss these small-little-tiny things. It is things like this that actually can spread a smile with almost no effort. Spread a smile and show your love for sparrows. Wish you a great World Sparrow Day & Happy International Happiness Day.

Sparrow SMS Celebrates 3rd Anniversary

Sparrow sms
Anniversaries for us are times for celebration and recognition, and they are also a time for remembrance. Today as we try to recall the 3 years of Sparrow SMS we are filled with jubilance and inspiration.

We had all arrived through different routes and yet we managed to travel together this far. This journey of Sparrow SMS involved so many choices, each an adventurous story in itself. We remember normal office days turning into hackathons— working overnight, clashing of ideas, finding successes, each and every one of it defines the success of Sparrow SMS down these years. Had this been any different, Sparrow SMS would not be the same company as it is now.

It was not easy for a startup like us to survive without any experience, investors, loans or resources. All we had was a passionate team that wanted to make an impact. The challenge of developing a strategy, understanding the forces that drive a company and developing relationships are what motivate us even to this day.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank each and every member of Sparrow SMS who believes in us and bears the same vision as us. Your energy and synergy are the pillars of this company. We also thank our customers and well-wishers who have been our biggest strength in truest sense.

Our success so far is no accident, nor is it guaranteed in the years to come, but we do know that Sparrow SMS will continue to make lives easier by simple and innovative SMS and VAS solutions which is the sole aim of the company.

We want to thank each of you for being a part of “The Story” which is only beginning to unfold. Thank you for being there. We expect your never ending support and presence in our future endeavours.

The "Legendary" Question

with 0 Comment
We just love to bring you good stuffs everytime and now when the SLC exams are going on, we know you definitely need some. Today its about a simple question (we know the title is exaggerated). The most common question that has been raised since centuries (well who knows? :)) is that-
"How can I concentrate in studies during my exams?"
You know even you have raised this atleast a dozen times till now. And even legendary are the answers we get every time we ask this question (whatever way we ask). So we thought why not put together some of those answers from around the world and show you how diverse are our we think. You'll be having a great time with this. Take a look.

The Question:
"How can I concentrate in studies during exams?"

Answers: (source: Internet)
1:  "I find the best way for me to study is to go in a private place in your house and read out loud. Yes talk to "yourself while you are reading. It helps with the distractions around the house.
2. "Sit at a suitable place like on a desk and not on a bed"
3. "Turn on the computer. Look up things"
4. "Switch off the computer, it's always going to be a distraction!"
5. "Try Yoga. It is very relaxing and helps to stimulate the mind. It would probably help you concentrate better."
6. "Try to eat something. This will help you with concentration. Stay away from the sugar items though."
7. "Study"
8. "You are allowed to take as many breaks as you want when you study. It helps with the clarity of your learning process. Cramming your study is just going to make you forget more information."
9. "Think about the what the instructor talked about in your last class and try to relate it to what you are reading"
10. "Remember the goal and why you are doing it. What's in it for you? Don;'t think of the now, think of the end, when you get an A on your paper."
11. "If you are a young person, you could put a password lock on your computer's internet connection and ask your parents to pick the password and "lock" you out of the internet until you show/tell them you are finished with school work. This would allow everyone else to surf on their own computers while keeping you from browsing."
12. "I listen to some soft music, that relaxes me and I seem to be able to focus on my studies lol"
13. "It's not difficult to concentrate on my studies because I know that my life will be better after I get an education."
14. "For girls, when you study, have a scent in the room, preferably a perfume or something. Then when you take the test, wear that perfume. It can help you remember what you study because you relate the scent to the information. Of course you have to use a scent that you wouldn't normally smell"

Some really serious, some quite practical, some obvious and the others...you know. So you got now how diverse we think? One question and numerous answers. Some even with no heads and tails. Especially the last point just made me roll on the floor. And answers no. 3 & 4 are amazing too.

This is what happens when we listen to a lot of people without actually looking inside ourselves. Everybody has a different weakness and therefore everybody has a different answer. Forget all that others say. Just think what has been distracting you when you study. It might be cell phone, music, somebody at your side or even a mosquito. Simply avoid what distracts you and there you are- concentrating on your studies. It might be tough in the beginning to avoid that but you can do anything if you really want & are trying to do it. So now concentrate on your studies ;) and Enjoy your exams.
And if you have come across any "amazing" answer, drop it in the comments below.

SLC 2069 kicks off in Nepal

with 0 Comment
Once again, like every year, SLC, one of the biggest national events of the country has arrived. With 547,165 students appearing the exam, SLC, this year, is being held from March 14-22. Government is all geared up to hold the exam in peaceful and fair manner. Education Minister Dina Nath Sharma has said that directives have been issued to ensure fair and peaceful conduct of the exam. Fourteen joint secretaries—one to each zone—has been deployed for monitoring and the exam centers. And interestingly as much as 19,860 security personnel will be present throughout the nation to keep things grounded.

SLC exam 2069

But we are not here to tell you only these SLC facts. We would like to share some tips with you to help you or your loved ones appearing the exam through the preparation. We know SLC is most talked about and hyped of all exams and besides it being dubbed as iron-gate even more amplifies the pressure upon the students. If you are giving the SLC or one of your siblings or relatives is appearing the exam, here are few quick tips that can help make the exam ride smoother:

-So the most important thing to do during SLC or any other exams is not to burden yourself with unnecessary pressure.
-Instead take regular breaks from studies and relax allowing your mind to refresh itself.
-Try to get prepared for the exam long before the exam arrives, this will help relieve some pressure during the exam time.
-Do not hesitate to take whatever help you need from people around you such as your siblings, parents and teachers.
-Be prepared with all the materials you need for the exam one day before the exam. Last minute preparation often gets messier and complicates the things even more.
-During the exam try not to panic, read your questions carefully before answering them and plan your time so that you finish the exam in time.

While all these tips are simple they are still effective every time. So we would like to wish all those appearing the SLC a very best of luck. We shall be with you even after the exam and also during your results. Just be positive and work smart and hard. Rock the exams!

Contest for Mobile Apps- Made in Nepal

with 3 comments
Mobile Apps sometimes seem like magic wands- one swing and a lot of things gets done magically in a moment. With the advent of smartphones, every user can now be that magician or at least learn a trick. Globally, the app industry is growing to multi-billion dollar industry reaping benefits for both developers and the app users. The users get a good utility for a minimal price usually around $1-$3 per app and the developers earn from the mass selling of such apps amounting to $ in thousands.

Nepal is no exception to the market of apps despite of lacking a robust mobile payment eco-system. Nepali app developers have been undertaking the development of a lot of iOS and Android apps through outsourcing from foreign markets. Now its turn for some pure Nepalese apps to rock the market. And stimulating such an entrepreneurial movement are some communities and their contests- the latest and most promising being Pivot Nepal.

The organizers believe that Pivot Nepal is an initiative to bring out entrepreneurial spirit within mobile application developer community in Nepal. And if you have some killer mobile app ideas and concepts that you think will work in Nepalese context and has the potential to be scaled up at an international level this is the right avenue for you to submit your idea and take it forward.

Pivot nepal

Prawesh Shrestha, the Project Manager at MobileNepal, replied to what is so unique and promising about this contest with these words- “ It is a competition to showcase and bring out best Mobile Apps and Services that are made in Nepal. It will provide help in refining ideas, assistance in various fronts that can convert skill and passion into sustainable and thriving business. It will link different businesses and investors with promising mobile app ideas and developers. It will also provide opportunities for international linkage and exposure.” He added, “This will definitely create enthusiasm amongst the developer community and interest in business community to innovate and contribute to Nepal's app market with incredible and valuable mobile apps.

As seen in the poster above, the apps can be submitted in three categories:
-Business and Financial Services
-Social Development
-Utilities and Entertainment

And the app can be at any stage of its development from a mere idea to a finished product. Waiting in the bags for the winners are cash prizes worth USD 6000 & more. For more details you can visit the official site here.

Now this definitely seems to be beginning of "Appreneurship" in Nepal and we, Nepalese are waiting to see some cool useful apps with the tag- Made in Nepal. So gear up all the developers and dive in the competition. Good luck from Sparrow SMS team.

Loadshedding reduced for SLC exams

with 0 Comment
Phew (sigh)! The loadshedding duration is down by 2 hours per day effective from 11 March, 2013. A small relief amidst everything complicated going on in the country. Thanks to the repair work accomplished in one of the Hydropower plants of our state that will now produce enough power to let Nepalese use the rare thing for an additional couple of hours per day. This definitely will bring a smile on the faces of especially the SLC students who are having a tough time preparing for their BIG exams.

To get the latest loadshedding schedule on your phone type G
                   & send it to 35001.
Eg: G4 to 35001 for group no. 4.

The resumption of power supply totaling between 55-60 MW from a under maintenance plant is to thank for this relief. Currently, the power supply is nearly half of the peak demand (550MW for a demand of 1000-1025 MW). But despite of all the criticism done about the attitude of government the current move may signify that effective steps are being undertaken to improve the condition of energy production in Nepal. A lot of projects are halted due to administrative procedures and some couldn't even make it to kick off. But there is no choice left than waiting and watching all that is being done. On our side we can only economize the use of electricity and stay hopeful that in a matter of few years Nepal becomes a self sustainable nation-at least in case of energy.
For now leave all the serious things behind, and enjoy the relief & reschedule all your important works because you have got the flexibility of 2 more hours to get things done. Pick up your phone and message G<group no.> to 35001 to get the routine below for the whole week on your phone. For eg: G1 to 35001 if your group no. is 1.

International Women’s Day 2013

with 0 Comment
The International Women's Day 2013 is approaching as the March passes and we, Sparrow SMS, would like to express our support for this day. We do believe that women should be given equitable treatment so that they can compete fairly with the other gender. Of lately, the society is changing and more women are getting access to education, health and sanitation and importantly, more women are holding positions in office and business than before. Nevertheless, many societies still define gender roles and are yet far from doing justice to its population irrespective of gender. So our only objective here is to try to make the world free of restrictions and domination and make it a fair and competitive playground for all.

This year the International Women’s Day is being celebrated worldwide with the theme - "THE GENDER AGENDA: GAINING MOMENTUM" and here is an excerpt from the official website of the day about the theme.

"Over time and distance, the equal rights of women have progressed. We celebrate the achievements of women while remaining vigilant and tenacious for further sustainable change. There is global momentum for championing women's equality. Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Thousands of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day. Many groups around the world choose different themes each year relevant to global and local gender issues...”

Back to us, while there are some issues that may gradually be dealt with time, some others need urgent action on our side. Gender based violence is one of them and is gaining momentum around the globe. If you are living in South Asia, you must be aware of the campaign (we featured in an article below) being run by World Bank Group on this sensitive issue. Your ideas and participation can do a lot in helping it make some impact. So, we hope that with time, conditions improve and women all over the world gain access to their fundamental rights and compete freely and fairly with everybody else for every authority that can ever be achieved.

Let us know if you have any comments or ideas that can help make this world a better place for women & if you are eligible, do think about taking part in the World Bank Campaign mentioned above. Just type your opinion in 140 characters and SMS it to 5455.

Evaluation Conclave 2013

with 0 Comment
"Evaluation should ultimately make a difference in the life of the people."
- The tag-line of Evaluation Conclave 2013
evaluation conclave
Keynote Address at EC 2013
Organizations all over the world put efforts into doing research, planning, mobilizing scarce resources, executing the activities on site, and doing other demanding tasks. But none of these make complete sense until they are evaluated. Every activity has a contribution and evaluating that contribution opens the door to improvement and feedback. Donors and funder invest a whopping sum of money in projects worldwide with the expectation that their money will help improve people’s lives. And so is the case with those who provide quality expertise in these projects. It also becomes the concern of the host country and other authorities who monitor the conditions of the subjects being addressed by the projects. Hence, evaluating them on various grounds and then passing on the evaluation reports to all the stakeholders to let them assess the value of their investments emerges as an important issue today. This process of assessment is simply called Evaluation & is done by Evaluators.

The Evaluation Conclave 2013, a meetup of evaluators and relevant people from around the world, was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 26 Feb to 1 March, 2013 at Hyatt Regency. The conclave had the presence of distinguished delegates from organizations like The International Development Research Centre (IDRC), The Rockefeller Foundation, The Sri Lanka Evaluation Association (SLEvA), Sambodhi, EvalPartners, The Center for Learning on Evaluation and Results (CLEAR), The World Bank and UNICEF among others. And participants mainly from South Asia & other countries attended the program, learning from the experiences and insights shared by the experts and other participants.

Evaluation Conclave
Participants at EC 2013
Sparrow SMS managed the social media broadcasting of the conclave trying to amplify its impact and reach to people around the world who can learn from such programs. The social media broadcast of the program through Facebook and Twitter connected people from all over the world who couldn't attend in person and who would find content of the program useful in any manner. Sparrow SMS has been recently trying to focus its CSR initiatives on social and development sector in Nepal by providing its rugged and powerful platform to organizations working actively in the field. Sparrow SMS services are helping them send & collect data, opinions & information in form of short text messages over any cellular network across Nepal. This makes the process of communication almost real-time, widely reachable and extremely cost effective.
