Black Friday

with 0 Comment
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November), often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In recent years, most major retailers have opened very early and offered promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season, similar to Boxing Day sales in many Commonwealth nations. Black Friday is not a holiday, but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day. Many non-retail employees and schools have both Thanksgiving and the day after off, followed by a weekend, thereby increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time. In 2013, approximately 141 million U.S. consumers shopped during Black Friday, spending a total of $57.4 billion, with online sales reaching $1.2 billion. The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation was made: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss ("in the red") from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or "in the black". For many years, it was common for retailers to open at 6:00 a.m., but in the late 2000s many had crept to 5:00 or even 4:00. This was taken to a new extreme in 2011, when several retailers (including Target, Kohl's, Macy's, Best Buy, and Bealls) opened at midnight for the first time. In 2012, Walmart and several other retailers announced that they would open most of their stores at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day (except in states where opening on Thanksgiving is prohibited due to blue laws, such as Massachusetts where they still opened around midnight), prompting calls for a walkout among some workers. There have been reports of violence occurring between shoppers on Black Friday. It is common for prospective shoppers to camp out over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to secure a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired items; because this poses a significant safety risk (such as the use of propane and generators in the most elaborate cases, and in general, the blocking of emergency access and fire lanes) at least one city has banned this practice. Telecom Penetration in Nepal hits 95%

with 0 Comment
The latest telecom statistics in Nepal published by Nepal Telecommunications are impressive. Telecom penetration rate has shoot up to 95.28% from 93.69%, in just one month, which shows a dramatic increase in number of telecom-services subscribers with 421,350 coming within that period. Ncell remains the market leader in voice telephony services with 48% followed by NTC with 45%, which has remained unchanged. On the other hand, NTC remains the leader in data-servies with 53% market share, followed by Ncell with 45%. Internet penetration rate has also increased to 34.09% from 33.76%.

The biggest winner in terms of data services in this one month has to be Nepal Telecom where is has seen significant rise in its ADSL subscription and

It still remains a question as to whether these statistics are representative of the actual scenario because of several factors such as population on which the study is based on, the number of inactive SIM cards and the number of people using multiple SIM cards. The summary of the statistics can be found in the Slideshare below:

What do rules say about HSEB Result 2071?

with 0 Comment
After the results are published, Type HSEB<space>Symbol-no and send SMS to 35001

Did you know? HSEB has its own rules regarding HSEB Results publishing date! By rule, Class 12 result should be published within the month of Shrawan and Class 11 Result should be published within the month of Bhadra. However, every year, students are forced to wait for weeks for the results, isn't it? Sparrow SMS, based on its experience of publishing results for the past five years looks to uncover the possible delays regarding HSEB results delay.

It is not strange to us that Class 12 results get published before Class 11 Result. It could be one of the factor in itself as HSEB looks to ensure that all tasks regarding HSEB 12 results are completed. Due to delays in publishing Class 12 Results, Class 11 Results are pushed backwards too. HSEB exams get completed by Jestha, but every year number of students taking HSEB exams is also increasing.

HSEB also wants to ensure that the results process is error free and so results take time to get published. Despite of that, each year many students file application for re-totaling. So you can judge from this how difficult task is it to publish the result with complete accuracy.

Recently, HSEB has also adopted double verification system, where, in the beginning all manual works are completed then the same is updated in computer system and verified with the manual records.

At the moment, HSEB Result 2071 of Class 11 maybe undergoing the same process, due to which delays are expected. We can say that HSEB 11 results may be published during the month of Poush. However, there is no official confirmation yet.

After the results are published, Type HSEB<space>Symbol-no and send SMS to 35001 to get HSEB results with marksheet in your phone.

Latest Telecom Stats of Nepal: Penetration rate crosses 93%

with 0 Comment
Nepal Telecommunications Authority has again published the latest Telecom Stats under its Management Information System Reports for the month of Shrawan (July 16 – Aug 15).

The key highlight of this issue is that telephone density rate in Nepal has gone up to 93.69%.  This is an increment from Ashad( June 15 – July 15) when the penetration rate was 92.68%. This can be attributed to 267,000 more subscribers of telephone and telecom-related services in the country in the space of one month.

Another key talking point in this issue is that NTC has managed to increase its market share from 44% to 45% in the voice telephony category, but it has suffered a disappointment in ADSL services as more than 20,000 people have unsubscribed from it.

Mobile penetration rate has also gone up from 83% to 84%, where more increases have been in NTC SIM subscribers than in Ncell SIM subscribers.  Likewise, internet penetration rate has increased from 33.15% to 33.76% of the 93.69%.

However, these data may not be indicative of the actual scenario because of different reasons. First of all, one individual can have multiple SIM cards of which some or many may be inactive. The problem of inactive SIM cards raises doubts on the authenticity of the information provided by NTA. Secondly, there may be many individuals who are connected by different internet and data services all at once. The use of constant population to express rates as its percentage is also subject to criticisms from experts.

You can find out more by viewing the slideshare below. Happy reading!
