The Officer of Controller of Examination and Ministry of
Education have decided to introduce letter grading system in SLC board from
this year.
In above the 80 years of SLC examinations being held,
numerical grading system was used to evaluate the students’ performances which
can be divided into four categories- Distinction, First division, Second
division and Third division.
Letter grading system was conducted in pilot phase for
technical and vocational streams last year of whom performances of 3256
students was evaluated.
The SLC exam results will be published in letter grading system
which will have six categories- ‘A+’ to the students scoring between 90-100
percent, ‘A’ to 80-89 percent, ‘B’ to 60-79 percent, ‘C’ to 40-59 percent, ‘D’
to 25-39 percent and ‘E’ to the students scoring 24 and below percent.
The pilot phase was conducted for technical and vocational
streams for SLC results 2071 in 99 schools last year out of which 215 students
got A+, 779 students got ‘A,’ 2131 got ‘B’, 124 got ‘C’ and one student got
‘D’.
The Ministry of Education has stated that the letter grading system will
be introduced in all streams this year.
The OCE has stated, “The main motive behind introduction of
letter grading is to eliminate the concept of pass and fail”. “But since this
concept is not familiar with a lot of people there might be some hindrances.”
the OCE said adding further.
A committee of nine members has been formed to ensure proper
implementation of the letter grading system according to Diwakar Dhungel,
Executive director of CDC. The members of committee are MoE Spokesperson Hari
Lamsal, Examination Controller Bishnu Bahadur Dware, Educationists Dr. Lekhnath
Adhikari and Dr. Ganesh Bahadur Singh among others.
The students in exempted category will be granted marks and
provisions as per past provisions.
