With SLC examinations just round the corner, students are busy prepping to pass the ‘iron gate’ with flying colors. Wistfully, it’s not the case for students in Terai due to the ongoing political unrest.
Even after repeated requests from various quarters, the government refused to change the academic calendar. Due to this reason, the MoE has decided to provide the students with reference books in Compulsory Mathematics, English and Science in eight districts: Saptari, Siraha, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Bara, Parsa and Rautahat free of cost.
MoE had presented a budget of Rs. 20 million to distribute the reference books to 56,000 students but the Ministry of Finance declined to pay the amount citing the middle of fiscal period as the reason.
The reference books will be called ‘Bidhyarthi Avhyas Pustika’ (students’ exercise book) and will be printed and published by local NGOs.
National Centre for Educational Development (NCED) had published books last year and distributed them to 84 schools last year.
“Due to lack of printing papers, printing of reference books is likely to get delayed,” said Ima Narayan Shrestha, director, National Centre for Educational Development. “The books are targeted to be provided by the first week of February”, he said adding further.

In the meantime, useful educational content through radio and television is being dispersed by the NCED.
